Dan D's Birthday

After the wonderful birthday Dan planned for me, the bar was set really high (spend next to nothing, but make the day amazing). I woke up extra early and got to work on Eggs Benedict (his favorite), using some of the bacon I picked up from Culinary Communion's 1000 lbs of bacon sell-off (which took only 14 hours, remarkably).

I worked from home, and spent my lunch hour running around town getting the very specific ingredients Dan asked to be included in his birthday dinner. Okinawan purple sweet potatoes, bok choy, and macnut crusted mahimahi. Unfortunately, no one in town had mahi mahi (or marlin), so I went with the controversial choice of Chilean Sea Bass. Having just finished reading Bottomfeeder (an exploration of eating seafood ethically), I was more than a little torn... but the part of me that wanted a great meal for Dan's birthday won the battle. Halibut just didn't seem special enough.

When Dan got home, I put on my cool new "What's Cookin' Good Lookin'? apron (an awesome birthday gift from Ruth) and got to work on his dinner.

Dinner turned out great (and pretty) and Dan enjoyed a little gift I got for free at work - a book about Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i.

The other birthday request was a sundae made of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, vanilla ice cream, cool whip, and homemade chocolate ganache... which ended up so big and decadent neither of us could finish them.

I hope I wasn't too demanding. Everything was wonderful. Thank you, again, almost a month later. I had a 34th birthday to cherish.
