Breakfast on Beacon, Ferry to Vashon, & Light Rail to Tukwila

Today we got up with the plan to take a trip somewhere outside the city and do a little hiking. My foot's been giving me some trouble lately (wearing slippers too much), so when I say a little hiking, I mean it - but we still wanted to get away from the city and explore a bit.

We started the morning (post-Farmers Market) by going up to Baja Bistro on Beacon Hill for brunch. I went with a chorizo & egg torta, which was loaded with a flavorful filling of, well, chorizo and egg.

Dan went for some breakfast enchiladas that he said were also tasty. We both devoured our food (it was late in the morning, so we were pretty famished). With how quick the service was, we were in and out in no time - which was perfect given our goal: making it to Vashon island, hiking around a bit, checking out downtown, and getting home by dinner.

We crossed over to West Seattle, then lined up for the ferry. It seemed we weren't the only ones in town who had the idea to head to Vashon for the day, because the lineup was long. But it moved fairly quickly, I suppose - despite a car broken down in line right at the toll booth, blocking one of the two lines.

Once over on Vashon, we drove through town and down to a park that's actually on the adjacent Maury Island. We chatted with a friendly bunch of guys who were just leaving the park, then walked down to the beach. It was a beautiful sunny day, and it felt great to be on a beach - even if the water was ice cold. We saw lots of shells and crabs and things, and waded in as long as we could stand it. Once we'd had our fill of the beach, we headed back into town and stopped in at Sporty's - a little bar on the main drag, so we could cool off with a beer & a soda. Then it was back to the ferry and back to Seattle.

We decided, however, to take off again for dinner - and see about taking the Light Rail to Southcenter. All indicates were that someone didn't think through how folks would use Light Rail to get to the mall, because the station is a mile and a half away from the mall, and there's no direct bus line to get between the two. In fact, the TripPlanner on Metro's site (which is also linked to Sound Transit's site) showed that we'd have to transfer to two buses, go well out of the way, and still walk a half mile. So we decided to brave the walk.

Why would we want to go to Southcenter on a hot Summer night? Bahama Breeze, of course!

We got a table really quickly, and cooled off from our walk with some cocktails. I went for my usual - the Bahamarita - and Dan went for his - a Mojito.

We started off dinner with an avocado crab stack, which came with some crackers and a spicy sauce.

Then we moved on to our entrees.

And got the paella, which had a surprisingly high seafood/sausage to rice ratio.

It was loaded with meats and shellfish and shrimp, though the serving size wasn't ridiculous.

I thought I'd be adventurous and order something new off the menu...

But I just couldn't resist the siren's song of the Salmon Tostada Salad - which I get almost every time we go to Bahama Breeze. It's just so refreshing and flavorful.

And since we were indulging (and had a 1.6 mile walk ahead of us to burn off some calories), we went for dessert, too.

Dan already knew he wanted the key lime pie, which was really delicious.

And I decided to try their pineapple upside-down chocolate cake, which was a little rich and a little odd - not bad, but not something I'd order again. Afterwards, it was back up to the Light Rail station as the sun was setting over Sea-Tac, and back home for bed.

And why all the exploration and indulgence? Dan & I celebrated 6 years together today!
