Frugal Fridays: Bebas Y Amigos

For the new year, I've decided to start a series of posts called 'Frugal Fridays', focusing on places to get lunch for under $5. I find it's increasingly difficult to find a healthy, fulfilling lunch for less than five dollars, so I'm on a mission to seek those places out and report back on what I find. I work in Downtown Seattle, so I suspect most of the places I'll try will be in that area - but who knows where I might end up? Maybe this series will inspire me to wander a little farther at lunchtime.

To kick off this series, I'm starting with one of my favorite lunch spots. On the terrace of the Municipal Tower (formerly Key Tower) at 5th and Columbia, there's a little restaurant called Bebas & Amigos. They have a dual menu, with sandwiches on one side, and standard Mexican fare on the other. The staff are always polite and quick, the food is fresh, serving sizes are perfect, and their prices are hard to beat.

My standard order is the Veggie Taco - a soft flour tortilla generously stuffed with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, beans, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole for just $2.74, tax included. And their condiment bar includes three types of salsa, chopped onions, chopped cilantro, and pickled onions, carrots & jalapenos - all free of charge.

Bebas sets the bar pretty high as I start this culinary safari, but we'll see what other lunch deals I can track down.

(Frugal Fridays is a weekly series dedicated to finding Seattle lunch spots where you can walk in with a $5 bill and walk out with a fulfilling, preferably healthy, lunch. If you have suggestions of places in the Seattle area with a great lunch for under $5 after tax, post a comment - I'd love the help.)

What a cool concept! I didn't know that such deals still existed. I look forward to your future "Frugal Fridays"!

Man that place was tasty. We'll be back for sure.

If you're running low on ideas Noodle Bowl or Green Tree(? the fried rice place about two blocks from US1/2) might fit your budget, though I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks for doing this!

Thanks for the tips, Jess! And I'm glad you liked Bebas. That place is great.
